Advocacy for Oromia Association in Victoria Australia Inc. is a non-profit advocacy organisation registered under the Associations Incorporation Reform Act 2012 in Victoria as April 2014. The purpose of the organisation is to promote the care and well being of the Oromo refugee and migrant experiencing difficulties in their lives. It is devoted to standing for Oromo people who are disadvantaged through advocacy, community education, case support, capacity building and information services. It has established and continues to provide services to Oromo people living with multiple social, political, economic, cultural and historical issues by using various strategies to enable and empower Oromo people to live better lives.
Advocacy for Oromia works to support the members of the Oromo refugee and migrant in many ways. We extend assistance to new comers by providing orientation about life and work in Australia, providing support to migrants who need it in their dealings with authorities, linking them to services available to them in the process of their resettlement and adjustment of their lives here in Australia. It is committed in promoting and advancing Oromo causes to ensure that their voice is heard and responded to.
Our advocacy service can be understood as speaking, acting or writing to promote and protect the best interests and well-being of Oromo people who are disadvantaged. Advocacy plays a critical role in ensuring that the rights and interests of people with disability are respected and realised.
Advocacy for Oromia advocacy aims to ensure that the rights of the Oromo people who are disadvantaged are upheld and that these people are supported to make their own decisions, particularly those where the outcomes affect their lives.
Strategies may include representing people who are disadvantaged making referrals to the appropriate channel to affect resolution of complaints, and influencing policies and practices to promote fair treatment and social justice for all people.
2. Community Education
Providing information for people who are disadvantaged is the basis of our community education program. The aim of the program is to promote learning and social development work with individuals and groups in their communities using a range of formal and informal methods. A common defining feature is that programmes and activities are developed in dialogue with communities and participants. The purpose of community learning and development is to develop the capacity of individuals and groups of all ages through their actions, the capacity of communities, to improve their quality of life. Central to this is their ability to participate in democratic processes.
Community education encompasses all those occupations and approaches that are concerned with running education and development programmes within local communities, rather than within educational institutions such as schools, colleges and universities. It has long been critical of aspects of the formal education system for failing large sections of the population in all countries and had a particular concern for taking learning and development opportunities out to socio-economically disadvantaged individuals and poorer areas, although it can be provided more broadly.
Our intention is to make contact with relevant stakeholders to enable a process of learning, sharing information and gaining awareness of services.
3. Information Service
Advocacy for Oromia offers information service and orientation that exceeds the expected value and brings about change for the individual user and the system. Research demonstrates that improving information can improve satisfaction with services.

4. Case Support
Advocacy for Oromia offers case support that improve the life experiences of the client focusing on building capacity and independence depend on the needs of the client. A client’s needs can compound the barriers and difficulties experienced in the journey of life in a new country. The aim of the program is to provide help for people with complex needs not met by other settlement services.
Our Case Support Worker is responsible for undertaking tasks that support case planning and documentation, referrals and appointments, case visits and day-to-day team priorities. Case support workers focus on supporting clients to access mainstream services and developing their ability to independently address issues and become self-reliant. This might cover things like linkages to disability or counselling services, budgeting skills, housing issues or education on health matters. Our experienced case support workers work with these vulnerable clients on a range of issues, including:
- Experience of severe torture and trauma
- Family conflict, family breakdown and family violence
- Homelessness and housing instability
- Mental health issues and substance abuse
- Serious physical health issues and disability
- Social isolation
- Poor life skills
- At-risk youth and child welfare issues
Our Case Support service assists clients with tailored and specific supports and interventions, with the aim for each of our clients to reach independence and the realisation of their aspirations. The service can vary in duration from several weeks to several months and is dependent on the degree of complexity for each client.
5. Capacity Building
Advocacy for Oromia provides a capacity building service that transforms our youth, women and community groups into great leaders and encourages great teamwork and impressive results. Advocacy for Oromia offers capacity building services through diverse types of strategies: training, conference, congress, symposium, seminar, and workshop where ideas and views on an issue can be exchanged.
Our intention is to provide capacity building that enables everyone to explore their hidden potential: to discover how to inspire trust and build credibility with their people, define a clear and compelling purpose, create and align systems of success, and unleash the talents and energy of a winning team.
