Cultural Diversity

What is Cultural Diversity?

Cultural diversity is the quality of diverse or different cultures, as opposed to monoculture, as in the global monoculture, or a homogenization of cultures, akin to cultural decay. The phrase cultural diversity can also refer to having different cultures respect each other’s differences. The phrase “cultural diversity” is also sometimes used to mean the variety of human societies  or cultures in a specific region, or in the world as a whole. The culturally destructive action of globalization is often said to have a negative effect on the world’s cultural diversity. The cultural diversity program is designed to foster cultural diversity and inter-cultural dialogue to promote the understanding and mutual respect of  different cultures.

The aim of the program is to to bring different communities to acknowledge their contributions to the development of Australia in a socially inclusive and cohesive harmonious spirit.

Diversity is an invaluable source of talent, creativity and experience. Cultural diversity includes (but is not restricted to):

  • language
  • race
  • ethnic background
  • country or region of origin
  • dress
  • values
  • religion and associated practices
  • social and community responsibilities
  • sexuality
  • disability
  • notions of family
  • family responsibilities
  • political views
