The Oromo Federalist Congress (OFC/KFO) received with deep sorrow, profound heartbreak, and heavy grief the news of the passing of the beloved Oromo artist, cultural emblem, and lifelong advocate for justice – Artist Ilfinash Qannoo.

Born and raised in Naqamtee, Western Oromia, Ilfinash Qannoo was never merely a performer. She was the voice of a silenced people. Her protest songs became the very foundation of Oromo political awakening – lyrics that for decades spoke unflinchingly of oppression, marginalization, and the long-cherished dream of democracy for our people.

A Voice That Would Not Be Silenced

The powerful voice of Ilfinash – which for years had challenged regimes, dictators, and prolonged systems of subjugation – still echoes as an eternal memory. She inspired generations of Oromo youth to preserve their culture, stand firm in their identity, and fight courageously for their fundamental human rights.

Her Final Days and Peaceful Departure

In her final days, she had recently returned to her homeland. While undergoing medical treatment at a hospital, she was overtaken by illness, and on Qaammee 1, 2018 (E.C.), she passed from this life – a departure that has left an unfillable void in the heart of the Oromo nation.

Yet, even in this loss, we draw immense strength from the message of unity she left behind – a message that will never fade from the hearts of the Oromo people. Though her physical form may depart, the seeds of unity, resilience, and love for freedom that she planted in the hearts of millions of Oromos will continue to grow and flourish across generations.
